GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medication is a class of drugs designed to help with weight loss and manage blood sugar levels. It works by mimicking a natural hormone in the body that helps regulate appetite, slows digestion, and increases insulin production when blood sugar levels are high. This helps you feel fuller longer, reducing overall food intake, while also supporting better blood sugar control.
If you stop taking GLP-1 medications, it is possible to regain some or all of the weight you lost, especially if lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise are not maintained. GLP-1 medications help control appetite and support weight loss, so discontinuing them may affect your ability to manage hunger and maintain your weight. It’s important to work with your healthcare provider to develop a sustainable plan for long-term weight management.
The duration of GLP-1 medication use varies depending on individual health goals and circumstances. Some patients may take GLP-1 medications long-term to maintain weight loss or manage blood sugar, while others may use them for a shorter period. It is important to work with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of treatment and evaluate your progress.
Common side effects of GLP-1 medications include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Constipation
Stomach pain or bloating
Decreased appetite
Headache
Most side effects are mild and tend to lessen over time as your body adjusts. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, please consult your healthcare provider for guidance.
